המקרה נודע לעירייה בעקבות פנייה של אמו של ניר, שסיפרה כי הגיטרה הגדודית נהרסה וכי הלוחמים מנסים לאסוף כסף לרכוש אחרת. בעקבות הפנייה נבדקה האפשרות למצוא גיטרה חלופית באגף החינוך ולבסוף הוחלט לרכוש גיטרה חדשה.
לפני שניר חזר לעזה, נמסרה לו הגיטרה יחד עם חבילת שוקולדים. בעירייה ציינו כי מדובר במחווה נקודתית שמטרתה לסייע ללוחמים לשמור על מורל גם בתנאי הקרבות.
